Cassandra Clare - City of Ashes

Mein 42. und letztes Buch für 2013, auch diesmal ausgeborgt von der lieben Katharina (danke schön :-)).

Der zweite Teil der Reihe beginnt genau da, wo der erste aufgehört hat: Clary kann sich nicht so wirklich damit anfreunden, jetzt eine Schattenjägerin zu sein, irgendwie ist jetzt alles anders, und früher war alles besser. Sie kommt überhaupt nicht damit zurecht, dass Jace ihr Bruder ist, und um sich von dieser Tatsache abzulenken, vertieft sie kurzerhand die Beziehung zu Simon.
Abgesehen davon erfahren sowohl Clary als auch Jace, dass sie etwas ganz besonderes sind, und müssen ihre außergewöhnlichen Fähigkeiten auch schnell unter Beweis stellen und in den eigenen Reihen muss Jace beweisen, ob er wirklich einer von den Guten ist...

Ich denke, das Ganze ist ein sehr netter Teenie-Roman, es kommen Vampire und Werwölfe vor, wie es eben gerade in Mode ist, aber trotz allem, die Geschichte ist nett geschrieben, und man könnte vor Wut schreien, wenn die Charaktere mal wieder irgendwas dummes tun, man kann mit den Figuren die meiste Zeit gut mitfühlen, und auch wenn ich mir in etwa vorstellen kann, wie diese ganze Dreiecksgeschichte im nächsten Band weitergeht, mir hat's gefallen, und ich würde mich freuen, wenn Katharina mir auch den 3. Band borgt :-).

Ich vergebe 8 von 10.

Mein Nachtkasterl wird ab sofort von John Carlins "Der Sieg des Nelson Mandela" geziehrt, das die Basis war für "Invictus". Aber anfangen tu ich damit erst, wenn ich gut im neuen Jahr angekommen bin.

In diesem Sinne: Ich wünsche Euch allen da draußen einen guten Rutsch und ein wunderbares 2014.

J. R. R. Tolkien - The Hobbit

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." is I think one of the most known startsentences of a book. I already read the hobbit a few times, but always in the german translation. And I have to say, the german translation (at least the one by Walter Scherf (I have not read the one by Wolfgang Krege)) is a very nice one, all the names are translated in such a beautiful way, and the German is in most cases nicer than is the English original. But, I did not want to discuss the german versions - sorry for the excursus.

I think I need not go into detail regarding the story, most will have read the hobbit at school, or later on when the big Lord of the Rings fever began, and those who have not read the book sure have seen the film(s) (if you like fantasy you should see the Jackson movies). All the same, since I saw the Hobbit on BD shortly before I started reading, I constantly had the dwarf-song in my mind, whenever I read the book, which came in handy when Thorin sang his song :-).

I did not manage to finish the book before I went to see the 2nd movie (The desolation of Smaug), which was a pitty, because some things are changed in a way I could not understand, and now in reading the book, I kept myself asking, when is this to happen, when is that to happen... as my memory did let go (growing old, I think ;-) ).

So all in all I love the hobbit, and I love the lord of the rings, I read both for the first time when I was about 12 and they are recurring in my reading calendar. Reading the english version had its drawbacks however, the names, as already mentioned are much more suggesting in the german translation, eg. The Shire --> Das Auenland, Rivendale --> Bruchtal... it might be that I like them more because I know them since I was little... all the same, the book tells a good story, and I am continuing with the Lord of the Rings :-) looking forward to going back to Mordor (it's been at least 12 years...).

Fabian Lutz - Zombifiziert, Band 5: Letzte Sekunden

Das ist das erste Buch, das ich gänzlich über die Kindle-App gelesen habe, und ich werde wohl den Kindle zusätzlich bemühen müssen, um festzustellen, ob die ganzen Fehler auch im "richtigen" Kindle-Buch vorkommen. Es gibt etliche Sätze, die im nirgendwo aufhören, wenn man auf die nächste Seite blättert, geht die Geschichte etwa 2 Sätze später weiter (man kann sich schon zusammenreimen, was zwischen dieser und der nächsten Seite passiert ist)... Bei Absätzen kommt es häufig vor, dass danach noch ein Wort kommt, das nirgends hin gehört... also nicht ganz so optimal.
Die Geschichte an sich bleibt aber lesbar

Davor:
Felix ist immer noch auf der Party, als ihm das kleine Mädchen von neulich was von einer Hütte im Wald erzählt. Also begibt er sich sofort dort hin. Leider wird er von den Schlägertypen verfolgt, und bald steht die Hütte in Brand und Felix kann sich gerade noch in den Keller retten. Dort sieht er Licht und folgt einem Gang in die vermeintliche Sicherheit.

Danach:
Marti überlebt seinen Einkauf beim Baumarkt und entschließt sich, auch noch Lebensmittel zu besorgen. Nachdem der Marktleiter eliminiert und der Wagen vollgeräumt ist, macht er sich auf den Heimweg. Der Tod eines Rotwildes verspricht ein leckeres Abendessen, bis es langsam dämmrig wird, und die "Kranken" sich auf die Beute stürzen.

Einiges wird in diesem Buch aufgeklärt, das über die letzten Teile unklar blieb, und man erfährt auch endlich, was jetzt eigentlich aus Tim wurde.

Insgesamt hat mir der 5. Band sehr gut gefallen, wären die Fehler nicht, könnte man eine glatte 10 vergeben, so bleibt es mal bei 9 bis ich den Gegencheck auf dem Kindle durchgeführt habe.
Sehr gut finde ich auch den Ausblick auf Teil II, indem die Geschichte teilweise aus anderer Perspektive weitererzählt wird.

Ich werde jetzt dann mit dem Hobbit anfangen, diesmal werde ich ihn auf englisch lesen, weil ich mir ja die (in meinen Augen) schöne Edition von Harpercollins UK gekauft habe, die ganz schwarz ist, und nur auf dem Cover und am Buchrücken neben Titel und Autor einen gefüllten Ring aufweist (die Lord of the Rings Edition mit dem Ring hab ich auch schon daheim :-))

Jason Mott - the Returned

Hm... This is the beginning of Amazons short summary:

"All over the world, people’s loved ones are returning from the dead. Exactly as they were before they died. As if they never left. As if it’s just another ordinary day."



 

I, being a great fan of everything which looks the least bit apocalyptic, thought that this one could be made for me. So, what's the story?

 

People are returning from the dead, it is not like they rise from their graves and pretend never to have been dead, they just appear, somewhere - not necessarily on the same continent where they died.

 

Lucille and Harold Hargrave are an older married couple, living in Arcadia, a small town in the , having lost their only son Jacob over 40 years ago. One day, an agent knocks on their door an presents them with their eight year old son, who has returned somewhere in China. Harold, not being sure what to think about the returned is very distant with his boy, whereas Lucille is from one moment to the other back to being the best mom in the world.

 

People all over the world are getting more and more problems with the returned (what should one think, when the dead rise and they are getting more and more each day), so the so-called Bureau (the agency which is in charge of returning the returned to their loved-ones) sets up camps for them. Harold, forced by his wife to spend some time with his boy, is caught by soldiers and put together with Jacob into the camp. In the beginning the life there is okay but soon Arcadia becomes one of the larger camps. After a short time the inhabitants have to move in order to make room for the once dead - of course this is not a cause for joy. Soon there is a riot, changing the Hargraves lives forever!

 

Somehow "The Returned" did not meet my expectations. It is more or less a family drama set within abnormal circumstances. The characters are well made, and lovable - especially the Hargraves and agent Bellamy. But not very much is happening, the book is not boring, do not misunderstand me, but thinking about it, there are more than 300 pages, and well... .

 

I award 6 out of 10 for good characters and a nice setting.

 

I started with the 5th installment of Fabian Lutz "Zombiedeutschland".

Update: I just realized that there are prequels... perhaps I will read them as well, as they seem all to be real short stories with only a few pages, available for a few cent...
